Terms of use
What this archive is, how far you can rely on it, and how to use what you find here without putting anyone at risk.
What this site is
The Iran Massacre is a non-commercial, independent archive that documents people killed, executed or imprisoned by the authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and helps their families. It is a memorial and a record for accountability. It is not a court and does not make legal findings.
The numbers on this site are counts of names this archive has checked. They are not a death toll, and they should not be added to another organisation’s figures.
How far you can rely on a record
Every record shows its sources and its evidence level (A to D). A record marked D has not yet been confirmed by a human rights organisation and is left out of every count. We correct mistakes as soon as we find them or someone tells us, and the method page lists our corrections. Check the sources of a record before you rely on it.
Using what you find here
You may quote, share and cite this archive for remembrance, human rights work, journalism, research and legal accountability, without asking. Please link to the person’s permanent page (theiranmassacre.com/p/ followed by their code), and keep the source and evidence level with any fact you quote.
Photographs belong to their owners, who are named where we know them. Ask the owner before you reuse a photograph outside these purposes.
Do no harm
Please use this archive the way we do, without putting anyone at risk:
- do not use it to identify, contact, pressure or harass families, witnesses or people in prison;
- do not republish details we have hidden or that a family asked to remove, and do not combine this archive with other data to find out who sent us information;
- do not present a record as proof of more than its sources say;
- do not copy the site automatically in a way that slows it down for others; use the API, within its limits.
When you send us information
Send only what you believe is true, and tell us where it comes from. By sending it you agree that we may check it, correct it, publish it in the way described on the form, or decide not to publish it. You keep any rights you have in what you send. You can ask us to withdraw it at any time.
Do not send information about a living person that could put them in danger without their agreement, and do not send anything you are not allowed to share.
Corrections and removal
Anyone can ask us to correct a record. A family can ask us to remove a photograph or a detail, hide a grave or keep a case low-profile, and we do it without asking why. Requests go through the Families page or our contact address.
Limits
We work carefully, but the archive is provided as it is and may contain mistakes. Links to other websites are given as sources; we are not responsible for their content. We may change these terms; the date below shows the last change.
