Morteza Zamani, a 27-year-old from Shahrud in Semnan province, was arrested on January 8, 2026, during protests on the city’s Istgah Street. He was taken to Shahrud Prison, where he remains. He was later sentenced to death on a charge of “moharebeh” (enmity against God), accused of destroying and setting fire to public property. Little else is known about his case. There is no public information about his trial, the court that sentenced him, or whether he was allowed a lawyer of his choosing. Several other protesters arrested in Shahrud have already been executed, and rights groups have named Zamani among the detainees at risk of execution.

Stop the execution of Morteza Zamani
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing about Morteza Zamani, who is held in Shahroud Prison in Iran and faces the death penalty (Sentenced to death).
I urge you to call on the Iranian authorities to halt this execution at once, quash the death sentence, and grant Morteza Zamani a fair retrial without recourse to the death penalty, with a lawyer of their choice and no use of forced confessions.

Do you know someone killed in Semnan?
Tell us privately. We check every name before it goes on the site, and we never publish who told us.
A death sentence is a status, not a permanent fact about a person. Every case has a check date and a source, and the earlier status is kept. An execution is recorded only with two independent rights-group or news sources, or with an editor’s written reason.
