How this archive works

This archive does not produce its own death toll. It brings together the lists published by human rights organisations and news outlets, matches the same person across those lists, and shows for every name which sources recorded it.

How a name travels

  1. 1SourcesRights groups, news reports, families and witnesses.
  2. 2Same person?Spellings, town, age and date are compared.
  3. 3A person checksNothing is published or merged without an editor.
  4. 4Tier A–DSet by the sources, recalculated when they change.
  5. 5Public pageWith every source, so you can check it yourself.

Example: Setayesh Soosanabadi
Listed by: iranvictims.com, Narrata, Office of the President of Iran (cross-check only)

D — not yet verified. The name comes from a single post, a community list, a family report or a list compiled with AI tools. It is shown, clearly marked, so that people who knew them can help, and it stays D until a recognised human rights organisation verifies it. D names are included in the total of names recorded, but not in the confirmed (A–C) figures.

Why unconfirmed names are public

During the blackout many deaths were never reported. If a name stays hidden, nobody who knew the person can find it and tell us what they know. So we publish unconfirmed names, clearly marked, and ask families and witnesses for information. We pass what we learn to human rights organisations so that they can verify it — never your contact details unless you agree. If a name is wrong, or the person is alive, it is removed straight away.

How a name moves up a tier

  1. D: the name is shown, marked, and we ask anyone who knew the person for information.
  2. C: the family confirms, or an editor checks posts from different people.
  3. B: a trusted rights group or news report names the person. We pass what families send to these organisations.
  4. A: a second, independent list names the person too.

Duplicates

The same name can be spelled many ways in Persian and English. Records are matched on name, city and age. Only certain matches are merged automatically; anything less certain is checked by a person, and in the meantime the two records are counted once.

Record 1Reza AhmadiKaraj · 24 · source: List A
Record 2رضا احمدیکرج · ۲۴ · source: List B
After the merge (illustration)Reza Ahmadi · رضا احمدیone person, both spellings, both sources; the old record number still opens this page

The names above are an invented example. A merge is never automatic when there is doubt, and it can be undone.

Government lists and AI lists

The Iranian government's own list is used only as a cross-check. If a name appears on it, the record says so, but it never counts as confirmation.

Lists compiled with AI tools are leads, never evidence. A name that comes only from such a list is shown as D, marked as an AI lead, so that the public can help confirm or correct it. It is never counted and never moves up a tier unless a recognised human rights organisation verifies it.

What we cannot know

Because of the blackout, deleted videos, pressure on families and conflicting reports, some details are missing or disputed. We do not fill the gaps by guessing. Where two sources give a different city, age or date, both stay on the record.

What the numbers mean

Every number on this site counts the names recorded here, not everyone who was killed. It changes as new lists arrive and duplicates are resolved. Figures from other organisations are quoted under their own names, and never added together or averaged.

Privacy and safety

We never publish home addresses, ID numbers or details about living relatives. If a family asks for a record to be corrected or removed, it is hidden straight away while we check.

Words we use

Independent list
A list by a rights group or news organisation that did its own work; reports by one organisation count once.
Lead (AI or community list)
A hint where to look. It is never evidence and never raises a tier.
Government cross-check
We note when a name is also on the state’s list. It never confirms anything.
Family report
Information sent by relatives. It can raise a name to C after an editor checks it.
Merge
Joining two records of the same person. Every source and spelling is kept and it can be undone.
Tier
How much evidence we hold now. It says nothing about the worth of a life.

Changes to our method

  • — The archive opens with tiers A–D and a source on every name.
  • — Names from AI lists become leads only; the government list becomes a cross-check only.
  • — Members of the regime’s forces are never counted among the Javid Naam.
  • — Corrections and merges are published as monthly counts below.
