Mehdi Ranjbar was arrested in connection with the January 2026 protests in Shahroud, in Semnan province. Rights groups say he was detained on January 8, 2026, and has been held in Shahroud Prison since then. He has been charged with moharebeh (“waging war against God”) and with destroying and setting fire to public property, and he has been sentenced to death. Reports of his age differ: Iran Human Rights says he is 18, while another rights group lists a birth year that would mean he was about 16 when he was arrested. Little has been made public about his life or his trial. He is one of several Shahroud protesters named as being at risk of execution in the same case.

Stop the execution of Mehdi Ranjbar
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing about Mehdi Ranjbar, who is held in Shahroud Prison in Iran and faces the death penalty (Sentenced to death).
I urge you to call on the Iranian authorities to halt this execution at once, quash the death sentence, and grant Mehdi Ranjbar a fair retrial without recourse to the death penalty, with a lawyer of their choice and no use of forced confessions.

Do you know someone killed in Semnan?
Tell us privately. We check every name before it goes on the site, and we never publish who told us.
A death sentence is a status, not a permanent fact about a person. Every case has a check date and a source, and the earlier status is kept. An execution is recorded only with two independent rights-group or news sources, or with an editor’s written reason.
