Ali Pishevarzadeh, a 28-year-old athlete from Gilan known to friends as “Ali Ostad,” was arrested in Rasht on January 9, 2026, during the nationwide protests. A lifeguard and former goalkeeper for the Chooka Gilan water polo team, he won medals in swimming and water polo and worked at a small café in the Rasht bazaar before his arrest. He lost his mother when he was four and lived with his father. He has been held in Lakan Prison, where fellow inmates say they saw signs of beatings on his body. He was charged with moharebeh over alleged arson, and state TV aired a forced confession in which he did not admit to the fires attributed to him. The Revolutionary Court in Rasht sentenced him to death after a trial that reportedly lasted about five minutes. As of October 2026, his sentence was not final and he remained at risk of execution.

Stop the execution of Ali Pishehvarzadeh
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing about Ali Pishehvarzadeh, who is held in Rasht Central Prison in Iran and faces the death penalty (Sentenced to death).
I urge you to call on the Iranian authorities to halt this execution at once, quash the death sentence, and grant Ali Pishehvarzadeh a fair retrial without recourse to the death penalty, with a lawyer of their choice and no use of forced confessions.

Do you know someone killed in Gilan?
Tell us privately. We check every name before it goes on the site, and we never publish who told us.
A death sentence is a status, not a permanent fact about a person. Every case has a check date and a source, and the earlier status is kept. An execution is recorded only with two independent rights-group or news sources, or with an editor’s written reason.
