Mehdi “Sikan” Roshani is a 25-year-old Kurdish man from Malekshahi, Ilam Province, and belongs to the prominent “Bawalg” tribe in Malekshahi. Security forces arrested him on January 16, 2026, during the protests, without presenting any judicial warrant. He was transferred to Tehran and held incommunicado for two months. A person who saw him afterward said his body was covered in marks from electric shocks and lashes, but he refused to confess. After about three months in detention, he was released on bail. The Ilam Revolutionary Court then sentenced him to three years in prison, later reduced to nine months. Security forces rearrested him on July 18 and took him to Ilam Central Prison, where he was formally charged with moharebeh (enmity against God) and efsad-e fel-arz (corruption on earth), both capital offenses. In early August, human rights groups reported that he had been sentenced to death and accused of killing police officer Ehsan Aghajani. However, citing one of his lawyers, Iran Human Rights later reported that an indictment has not been issued yet, there are no charges of murder or assault in the case, and he categorically denies the charges. According to Kolbarnews, the security agencies accuse him of having his photo taken on a chair in front of the Malekshahi governorate, raising the Kurdistan flag on Kabirkuh mountain, and damaging public property. His family denies these accusations. He remains in Ilam Central Prison under a temporary detention order.

Stop the execution of Mehdi Roshani
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing about Mehdi Roshani, who is held in Ilam Central Prison in Iran and faces the death penalty (Facing charges that carry the death penalty — Unclear — needs verification).
I urge you to call on the Iranian authorities to halt this execution at once, quash the death sentence, and grant Mehdi Roshani a fair retrial without recourse to the death penalty, with a lawyer of their choice and no use of forced confessions.

Quoting one of the lawyers on the case, an informed source said: “Mehdi Roshani has been formally charged with moharebeh (enmity against God) and efsad-fil-arz (corruption on earth), and his case is currently pending at the Ilam Prosecution Office. However, an indictment has not been issued yet.” The source added: “There are no charges of murder or assault in the case and Mehdi categorically denies the charges brought against him.”
A death sentence is a status, not a permanent fact about a person. Every case has a check date and a source, and the earlier status is kept. An execution is recorded only with two independent rights-group or news sources, or with an editor’s written reason.
