Kamal Khanbabaei, a 32-year-old married father of one from Qazvin, was arrested by Intelligence agents on January 15, 2026, during the nationwide protests. He was held for about ten days in a security detention facility, where he was interrogated and reportedly beaten and tortured to extract a forced confession, before being moved to Choobindar Prison in Qazvin. Branch 1 of the Qazvin Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Asadi, later sentenced him to death on the charge of moharebeh (“waging war against God”) for alleged participation in destroying public property. According to a source close to his family, one of the main accusations against him was breaking two surveillance cameras. His lawyers appealed, and the case was referred to the Supreme Court. As of the latest reports (August 2026), he remains on death row in Choobindar Prison awaiting its decision.

Stop the execution of Kamal Khan Babayi
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing about Kamal Khan Babayi, who is held in Qazvin Central Prison in Iran and faces the death penalty (Sentenced to death).
I urge you to call on the Iranian authorities to halt this execution at once, quash the death sentence, and grant Kamal Khan Babayi a fair retrial without recourse to the death penalty, with a lawyer of their choice and no use of forced confessions.

A death sentence is a status, not a permanent fact about a person. Every case has a check date and a source, and the earlier status is kept. An execution is recorded only with two independent rights-group or news sources, or with an editor’s written reason.
