Their story

Mohammad Mahdi Jarchi, 38, was shot dead by security forces during protests in Fardis, Karaj, in Alborz Province, on the night of January 9, 2026. Mahdi loved music. He played the piano and composed songs. About a month earlier, he and his fiancée had moved from Rasht to Karaj for better job opportunities, and they lived together in Fardis. On the morning of January 9, he saw the bodies of several people killed in the protests being moved outside a clinic near his home. He told his friends that no one was looking out for them and people had to act for themselves. That night, he went out to protest with his fiancée, Bahareh. According to his fiancée, the two were standing side by side when there was a sound like the air being torn apart, and Mohammad Mahdi fell to the ground. In the darkness, it took her a few seconds to realize what had happened to him. A bullet had struck him from behind, piercing his lung and passing through his heart. With the help of a passerby, she carried him into a nearby house. From the house’s parking garage, they watched security forces fire finishing shots into the wounded and throw bodies into vehicles before driving them away. It took an hour and a half to find a hospital or clinic that was not surrounded by security forces. Throughout that time, Bahareh kept her hand pressed on the wound to stop the bleeding. By the time they finally reached a hospital, Mohammad Mahdi had lost so much blood that doctors could not save him. His last words to Bahareh were: “Take care of yourself. I love you, I love you, I love you.”

Their narrative
