Alireza Sepahi Badjani

Alireza Sepahi Badjani was 25 and from Isfahan. He was arrested on 10 January 2026, two days after the protests at Alikhani Square, together with his mother. According to the UN special rapporteur, his mother was reportedly tortured in front of him, and he and his cousin were beaten in front of their families. He was one of 12 defendants sentenced to death in the Alikhani Square case, in which the authorities accused protesters of killing four police officers, and he was convicted of membership in an armed group. The Abdorrahman Boroumand Center said the trial had serious flaws and ignored defence evidence, including footage that reportedly showed he was not in the area at the time. His cousin Abolfazl Sepahi Badjani was hanged publicly in Isfahan on 28 July 2026. Alireza was due to be hanged with him, but he had a heart attack shortly before and was taken to Al-Zahra Hospital. On 4 October, the night before his execution, he married his fiancée, Mahshad Kashani, who was also jailed over the protests, in a ceremony held by phone from prison; the authorities refused to let them meet. He was hanged at dawn on 5 October 2026 (13 Mehr 1405) in Isfahan's Dastgerd Prison, alongside Alireza Raisi, while his lawyer was still seeking a retrial. His body was not returned to Isfahan; it was taken to Kashan for burial.
