Their story

Arezou Abedi, 50, was a resident of Isfahan. She was an athlete, a certified fitness coach and a mountaineer, and she was married with two children. IranWire also reported that she ran a postal service agency in the town of Dorcheh, near Isfahan. On January 9, 2026, she joined protests on Bagh-e Daryacheh Street in Isfahan with her two children and was shot in the head by security forces. With help from bystanders, her children took her to Saadi Hospital, which the family says refused to admit her. While they were driving her to Alzahra Hospital, Basij and security forces stopped their car and fired into the air to make them get out, but eventually let them pass. Abedi died before reaching the hospital, reportedly in her son’s arms. Her body was taken to the Alzahra Hospital morgue. After three days of efforts by the family, it was released on the condition that no public ceremony be held. Under the watch of security forces, she was buried at night in Bagh-e Rezvan cemetery in Dorcheh, beside her father’s grave. Her forensic death certificate gave the cause of death as “cardiac arrest.” Residents of Dorcheh later laid flowers in her memory at the Khaghani intersection, and in October 2026 family and friends marked her birthday at her grave.
