امید حسنپور، ۲۱ ساله و اهل سودرجون فلاورجان اصفهان بود. تنها دوماه از پایان خدمت سربازی‌اش گذشته بود و در روزهایی به سر می‌برد که قرار بود مسیر تازه‌ای برای آیندهٔ خود انتخاب کند؛ روزهایی که برای بسیاری از جوانان هم‌سن او، زمان برنامه‌ریزی برای کار، ادامهٔ تحصیل یا ساختن زندگی مستقل به شمار می‌آید. شامگاه ۲۰ دی، او در میان جمعیتی حضور داشت که در خیابان شعار می‌دادند. بنا بر روایت شاهدان و منابع محلی، ناگهان از پشت‌بام ساختمان‌های اطراف تیراندازی آغاز شد. به گفتهٔ این منابع، هیچ هشدار یا اخطاری پیش از شلیک‌ها داده نشد و گلوله‌ها مستقیماً به سمت مردم روانه شدند. در همان دقایق نخست، تعدادی از حاضران بر زمین افتادند و شمار دیگری نیز زخمی شدند. حدود ساعت ۱۰ شب، گلوله‌ای به امید اصابت کرد. او را با آمبولانس از محل خارج کردند، اما نگرانی خانواده از همان لحظه آغاز شد. روایت‌ها می‌گویند افرادی که قصد داشتند آمبولانس را دنبال کنند، با تهدید روبه‌رو شدند و به آنان هشدار داده شد که از تعقیب خودرو خودداری کنند. به این ترتیب، نزدیکان امید ساعاتی را در بی‌خبری کامل سپری کردند و از سرنوشت او اطلاعی نداشتند. نام امید حسنپور پیش از آن نیز در فضای مجازی شناخته شده بود. ویدئویی از او منتشر شده بود که در آن به زبان انگلیسی خطاب به دونالد ترامپ صحبت می‌کرد. پس از کشته شدنش، همان ویدئو بار دیگر دست‌به‌دست شد و توجه بسیاری را جلب کرد. برای عده‌ای، آن تصاویر آخرین یادگار جوانی بود که در ۲۱ سالگی جان خود را از دست داد؛ جوانی که دوران سربازی را پشت سر گذاشته بود و هنوز فرصت چندانی برای تجربهٔ سال‌های پیش روی زندگی‌اش پیدا نکرده بود.
